Reflect

Ponder-on-the-Quran

Ever read the Quran and felt that the ayahs are placed in a random manner? One ayah doesn’t seem connected to the next.

It is not random because the Quran is called القُران الحكيم and its speaker is the most Wise. When a wise speaker speaks, it is not just a random haphazard flow of ideas, it all makes sense and has a purpose. All we need to do is what Allah encourages us to do, which is THINK and RELECT.

Reading the Quran as a cursory read also has its own benefits, but actually taking out time, reflecting and pondering on the ayat uncovers different levels.

The word احكَمَ also means “embroidery” or to stitch. In embroidery every knot and weave is connected and bonded to the next. There is a flow and connectivity. Similarly the Quran is always in flow and connected. The flow however is not always obvious. Reflection and some hard work, some thinking is necessary. Isnt it the way of the world, that anything precious has to be worked for?

One of the most remarkable qualities that sets a human being apart from other creation is our ability to think. And this exercise of getting lost in the word of Allah, of trying to find the wisdom, beauty and messages in it for us, is one of the most intimate connection a person can have with Allah. Tadabbur (reflection) on the Quran is one of the biggest gifts to humanity from Allah that many of us miss out on.

What a beautiful moment that is, when you are sitting alone and pondering on these words, unraveling their messages, and the soul from deep within recognizes it as the truth unlike any other!

Once you start it is difficult to stop, and one might argue that perhaps the human ability to think was created especially so that we could use it to unravel and decipher the beautiful mysteries in Allahs words, and find in them messages filled with wisdom for us. The peace and intimacy one obtains through this journey is unparalleled.
